Spermidine
About
About Spermidine
Spermidine is a naturally occurring polyamine found in all living cells and in wheat germ, soybeans, and aged cheese, with robust evidence for autophagy induction and cardiovascular protection. Epidemiological data links higher dietary spermidine intake to reduced all-cause mortality. Clinical trials show improvements in memory performance in older adults with subjective cognitive decline. It is one of the most evidence-backed longevity nutraceuticals commercially available.
Science
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits EP300 acetyltransferase to upregulate autophagy-related gene transcription; suppresses acetylation-dependent pro-inflammatory gene programs; and induces mitophagy through direct interaction with key autophagy regulators, mimicking the effects of caloric restriction.
Dosing
Typical Protocol
1–5 mg oral daily as supplement; wheat germ extract standardized to 1 mg spermidine per serving is the most studied commercial form.

Regulatory
Legal Status in 2026
This compound has completed clinical trials and received formal FDA approval for one or more indications. It can be legally prescribed by licensed physicians, filled at any licensed pharmacy, and may be covered by insurance. Off-label use by physicians is also legal. This is the highest level of regulatory clearance available in the US.
Evidence
Evidence Tier
Evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or large observational studies in humans. This is the gold standard — effects have been measured in controlled conditions and results are peer-reviewed and reproducible.
