Urolithin A
About
About Urolithin A
Urolithin A is a gut microbiome-derived metabolite produced from ellagitannins in pomegranates and walnuts, proven in human clinical trials to improve mitochondrial function and muscle strength in older adults. It is the first compound clinically demonstrated to induce mitophagy — selective clearance of damaged mitochondria — in human muscle. Commercially available as Mitopure (Timeline Nutrition), it is one of the best-characterized longevity nutraceuticals in human RCTs.
Science
Mechanism of Action
Activates PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy to clear dysfunctional mitochondria; upregulates mitochondrial biogenesis through AMPK activation; improves mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production in aged skeletal muscle cells.
Dosing
Typical Protocol
500–1,000 mg oral daily (Mitopure); effects on muscle function observed at 12 weeks in clinical trials.
⚠ Protocol information is for educational purposes only. Dosing must be determined by a licensed physician based on individual health status and goals.
Regulatory
Legal Status in 2026
This compound has completed clinical trials and received formal FDA approval for one or more indications. It can be legally prescribed by licensed physicians, filled at any licensed pharmacy, and may be covered by insurance. Off-label use by physicians is also legal. This is the highest level of regulatory clearance available in the US.
Evidence
Evidence Tier
Evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or large observational studies in humans. This is the gold standard — effects have been measured in controlled conditions and results are peer-reviewed and reproducible.
